Orthopaedics is the medical specialty devoted to the
diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of injuries and diseases
of your body's musculoskeletal system. This complex system includes your bones,
joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves and allows you to move, work
and be active.
Orthopaedic visits start with a personal interview and physical
examination. This may be followed by diagnostic tests such as blood tests, X-rays,
or other tests.
Treatment may involve medical counseling, medications, casts,
splints, therapy, exercise or surgery. For most orthopaedic diseases and injuries
there is more than one form of treatment. Your physician will discuss treatment
options with you and help you select the best treatment plan.
Orthopaedic Surgery
Orthopaedic surgery is the medical specialty that encompasses
the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. Orthopaedic surgeons
treat a variety of problems in all ages of patients.
Spine and Back
Spine and back conditions range from herniated discs and low
back or neck pain, to complex problems such as spinal tumors, scoliosis and
spine fractures. Many spine problems can be managed by non-operative techniques
such as medication, home exercise, injections, and physical therapy or rehabilitation.
If surgery is clearly indicated, qualified spine surgeons can perform the full
spectrum of services at CRMC.
Hip and Knee Replacement
A total hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which the
diseased cartilage and bone of the hip joint is surgically replaced with artificial
materials. Hip replacements are commonly performed when progressively severe
arthritis in the hip joint impairs walking, climbing stairs and standing. Replacement
is generally considered after pain becomes so severe that it impedes normal
function despite use of anti-inflammatory medications.
A total knee replacement is generally performed when a person
has a severe degenerative joint disorder such as osteoarthritis in which the
articular, or moving, surfaces of the knee deteriorate, leading to severe pain,
limitation or loss of function and/or deformity of the joint.
Other treatments usually used before knee replacement surgery
include:
Acetaminophen or anti-inflammatory drugs
Surgical removal of inflamed synovial tissue
Restructuring the bones to shift stresses from diseased
tissue to more healthy tissue, called osteotomy
Hand, Shoulder and Elbow
Evaluation and treatment services are offered for hand, shoulder
and elbow injuries, arthritis, congenital deformities, upper extremity joint
replacement, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendon problems, rotator cuff problems,
and shoulder problems.
