Bariatric Program
The bariatric program is a specialized weight loss service offered through the University of Missouri Health System, Missouri Bariatric Services. One of two surgical procedures (Gastric Banding or Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass) are offered to participants of the program in addition to nutritional information, pre and post operative care and consultation, in depth education about each procedure, and monthly support groups hosted at Capital Region Medical Center (CRMC) Southwest Campus.
The groups are held the second Monday of each month at 5:15. The group is intended for individuals in all stages of the bariatric program (pre-operative, those who have just had surgery, and individuals who have had surgery many years ago). The primary purpose of the group meeting is to provide education, support participants with struggles that may arise before and after surgery, keep participants motivated, and identify those individuals who may be in need of additional services.
There is a collaborative effort between Missouri Bariatric Services and the Center for Mental Wellness at CRMC. Missouri Bariatric Services require a psychological evaluation for each potential participant of the program. A psychological evaluation must be completed by a licensed psychologist and will include information deemed important to achieving success in the bariatric program. Participants may be queried about medical information, mental health history, potential life stressors, past weight loss efforts, their understanding of risks and benefits of surgery, and possible consequences of non-compliance. Psychological testing may be included if there is question about mental health issues that may interfere with surgical treatment/compliance.
Missouri Bariatric Services has a list of preferred providers that can complete a psychological evaluation. These preferred providers have had experience with bariatric patients and the assessment procedure. Dr. Ann Pollock at CRMC Center for Mental Wellness is one of those providers. In addition to completing a psychological evaluation and testing for bariatric surgery, Dr. Pollock also offers individual and family therapy to help address barriers related to weight loss, compliance with treatment recommendations, and mental health issues commonly identified in bariatric populations (depression/anxiety).
