Mammography

Early detection is the key. Because our primary goal has always been to deliver the best quality care to our patients, we added breast tomosynthesis (known as 3-D mammography), to our breast health services. Mammography remains the single most effective method of screening for breast cancer. It can detect cancer several years before physical symptoms appear.

Capital Region Medical Center was the first facility in Jefferson City to launch the latest in breast screening through the addition of 3-D breast tomosynthesis with the Hologic Selenia Dimensions digital mammography system.

Self-referral mammograms

Self-referral mammograms are available at CRMC for women age 40 years or older without any breast problems or symptoms who have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months. If your physician has agreed to participate in the self-referral program, you may request your mammogram report to be sent to your physician. If your physician is not a participant, you may get a written order from your doctor for a mammogram. If you do not have a physician or do not have a self-referral-participating physician and still wish to have a yearly screening mammogram, your report will be sent to a CRMC general surgeon.

CRMC is accredited by the American College of Radiology and certified by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration).

American Cancer Society recommendations

  • Age 40 and older: Mammogram annually and clinical breast exam by a healthcare professional.
  • Ages 20 to 39: Clinical breast exam by a healthcare professional at least every three years.
  • Age 20 and older: Self breast exams monthly.

These ages are used as a guideline. Please notify your physician of any concerns or questions you may have. If you have a history of breast cancer in your family, discuss mammography screening guidelines and scheduling with your healthcare provider.
