Research Profile
Rachna Mamidi, MD, is a board-certified pediatrician who practices neonatal and perinatal medicine and cares for babies with fetal abnormalities. Her research focuses on improving outcomes for premature infants through continuous physiologic monitoring and a better understanding of neonatal respiratory and oxygen physiology. Dr. Mamidi’s work has examined noninvasive respiratory support, oxygen management and intermittent hypoxemia in preterm infants, including research demonstrating that extended continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) reduces intermittent hypoxemia in stable preterm infants.
At the University of Missouri School of Medicine, she is building a research program that leverages continuously collected physiologic data to identify early biomarkers of neonatal disease. Her current work examines longitudinal patterns of oxygenation and respiratory support and their relationships with important outcomes of prematurity, particularly retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). The long-term goal of this work is to identify physiologic signatures that improve early risk prediction and enable more individualized care for premature infants.
This research is supported by multidisciplinary collaborations across the School of Medicine and University of Missouri, including neonatology, pediatric ophthalmology, clinical informatics, engineering, biostatistics and clinical research. Through these collaborations, Dr. Mamidi aims to develop innovative approaches that transform routinely collected neonatal monitoring data into clinically meaningful tools for predicting disease and improving outcomes for vulnerable infants.
