Types of Lymphedema
The two types of lymphedema are:
- Primary lymphedema: A chronic and usually inherited condition that limits drainage of your lymphatic system.
- Secondary lymphedema: Occurs after removal of your lymph nodes or other damage to your lymphatic system. It is more common than primary lymphedema and is a frequent side effect of cancer surgery or radiation. Secondary lymphedema may also occur from injuries, infections or other health conditions like heart disease or obesity.
At MU Health Care, our certified lymphedema therapists can help manage these conditions with the latest treatments.
Lymphedema Assessment at MU Health Care
When you first meet with our team for your lymphedema evaluation, we’ll ask you questions about your health and treatment goals.
We may ask you to remove some clothing for your examination, so we can check for signs of swelling, skin damage and other lymphedema symptoms. We may measure your limbs to get a baseline of your limb swelling, so we can track changes over time.
Whether you’re still receiving cancer treatment or have completed treatment, we will develop a personalized care plan to manage your symptoms.
If there is ever a concern that you have a different condition than lymphedema, we’ll work with other specialists at MU Health Care. They may recommend other tests and treatments for your swelling.
