What is orthopaedics?

Orthopaedics is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of injuries and diseases of your body's musculoskeletal system. This complex system includes your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves and allows you to move, work and be active.

Orthopaedic visits start with a personal interview and physical examination. This may be followed by additional diagnostic tests.

Treatment may involve medical counseling, medications, casts, splints, therapy, exercise or surgery. For most orthopaedic diseases and injuries, there is more than one form of treatment. Your physician will discuss treatment options with you and help you select the best treatment plan.

Orthopaedic surgery

Orthopaedic surgery is the medical specialty that encompasses the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. Orthopaedic surgeons treat a variety of problems in patients of all ages.
